El-Hussein Mosque & surrounding markets

The mosque was first built in 1154 as a shrine for Al-Hussein, the Prophet's grandson.

Though Al-Hussein was killed in a battle over caliphate claims almost 5 centuries earlier, his head was reportedly brought to Cairo during the Fatimid rule and this mosque was built for it.

The mosque was subject to many changes and there seems to be a little left from the original building as subsequent dynasties altered and raised the mosque.

The mosque has a big value to Moslems and services regularly take place in it, so visitors are expected to dress modestly and ask for the help of anyone inside.
